25.10.2019 – After qualifying from Superpole in 14th place Jordi Torres found bad luck at the very beginning of Race One on his Team Pedercini Racing by Global Service Solutions WorldSBK machine, after suffering a big highside crash.
As the WorldSBK riders started their warm-up lap for Race One under the floodlights in the desert night in Qatar, Jordi’s machine appears to have been struck by a loose stone or other object, which caused a water leak from his cooling system.
With a fluid on his rear tyre, Jordi suffered an immediate highside after the rear stepped out of line and then caught again suddenly, and he landed hard on his right knee.
Not knowing what the problem with his machine was Jordi rode back to the pits to get his bike checked over. Once the results of the water leak were seen on his machine, the decision was made to retire from the race.
The Team Pedercini Racing by Global Service Solutions squad will have two more chances to score strong results on Saturday 26th October before the championship itself wraps-up after 13 intense rounds of competition.
The ten-lap Tissot Superpole Race takes place at 16.00 and the very last race of the season, over 17 laps, will begin at 20.00, local time in Qatar (+1 hour CET).
After WorldSSP Superpole qualifying Team Pedercini Racing by Global Service Solutions pairing Ayrton Badovini and Kyle Smith will start the 15-lap race on Saturday from the third row of the grid after Ayrton was seventh fastest and Kyle ninth.
Jordi Torres #81 – Rider:
“I think that when we formed the grid it was the first time all weekend that all the riders had done so. In the warm-up it was the first time that we all started together and used the whole track width. I think maybe a little stone, or something like this, hit my bike and went through the radiator. I braked early and the back end came right round so I think there was some water or fluid on the tyre because the highside was immediate. I am OK. I hit my right knee in the crash – and it will be more painful when I wake up tomorrow! But it will be fine”.
Lucio Pedercini – Team Manager:
“We are not sure what happened in the Superbike race but there was water on the bike. The mechanics wanted to be sure what was wrong when Jordi came back into the pits. It is better to check these things out well. For sure we were unlucky and we hope for better tomorrow. In WorldSSP it was not bad but with his second fresh tyre Ayton had some problems so he did not improve his best time. But we are happy for his qualifying position. Kyle is behind by just one tenth so we want to finish the season in a good position tomorrow”.
