2018 WorldSBK Championship
Round 13, Losail, Qatar
Race 2
Saturday 27th October
Circuit: 5.380M

The final race of this year’s WorldSBK Championship in Qatar was cancelled because of concerns about the safety of the 5.380m circuit.

The earlier part of the day saw the desert circuit blighted by sandstorms followed by heavy rain, which left many areas of the track and service roads flooded. Although the rain stopped, there was a lot of surface water, which began to clear once the temperatures rose and the wind started to pick up.

The WorldSSP race took place, with a reduced race distance, but it was clear that the track was not in a good condition, so the race director decided that the track was not safe enough for the WorldSBK race to take place.

Here in Qatar, and in the past few rounds, Pedercini Racing has given a superb opportunity to Gabriele Ruiu. Having never ridden a WorldSBK before, the young Italian was thrown in at the deep end, but he has acquitted himself well, gained valuable experience and will be one to watch in the future.

It is always disappointing when a race is cancelled - especially when it is the last race of the season - but safety is paramount and there is little doubt that the correct decision was made today.
